The '70s!

In the waning days of the 1960s, two paths crossed not quite by accident, but with more than a hint of adventure. Sallie arrived in Florida after graduation, sent with her parents' blessing to stay with her sister—a sister who had already scouted a potential suitor in Ralph, the boy just down the street. When Sallie’s travel day unfolded like a comedy of errors—a hurricane, lost luggage, a car accident—it was hardly the auspicious start to a romance. Bruised and weary, makeup smudged, Sallie was in no mood for introductions, yet fate (and family) insisted. Ralph, undeterred by the chaos, was ready to meet her; he’d glimpsed her photograph and agreed to entertain his neighbor’s sister with little hesitation.

Their early days were marked by easy laughter and a sense of belonging. Sallie was drawn not just to Ralph’s humor but to the warmth she sensed in his family, something she hadn’t known before. Their first date—fittingly—to a youth group meeting, planted the seeds of something deeper. It didn’t take long for love to bloom; Ralph confessed his feelings early, to Sallie’s slightly panicked surprise. Even so, amid those church pews and shared jokes, both sensed almost from the beginning that this was it, the person they’d choose for life.

The world outside pressed in quickly. When Ralph joined the Navy to avoid the draft for Vietnam, it meant years of long-distance calls and lonely stretches. Sallie, meanwhile, built her small world in Florida, waiting. Absences only sharpened their sense of commitment. When Ralph returned on a short leave, they hastily planned a wedding—just eight people attending, a borrowed honeymoon suite, and a modest apartment within Ralph’s walking distance to the base because they didn’t own a car. Family was surprised but quietly supportive, recognizing a simple, steadfast love in the making.

Decades wore on, stitched together by the everyday acts of care that leave quiet marks. There were lean years, lean enough to etch worry lines: young children in a home that stretched every paycheck, Sallie home until the children were school-age, then working at the schoolhouse herself. Morning sickness and broken bones, surgeries and stretches of sitting vigil—each crisis met with shared resolve. Sallie’s battle with anxiety and the quiet work of counseling became another chapter; Ralph’s patience and understanding became a gentle constant behind her healing. Each hardship became a thread, weaving them closer.

Looking back, Sallie and Ralph count their blessings with laughter—these days, doctor visits have become the centerpiece of their “social calendar,” but their partnership still circles around church, friends, and, whenever possible, travel. The secret to their long run, they say, boils down to a playful spirit (“she’s always right!” laughs Ralph), honest communication, and never forgetting to have fun as they did in their dating days. Their deepest pride radiates from their family, the assurance that their children and grandchildren carry forward the same faith and love that shaped their own union. For all the storms—real and metaphorical—they weathered in the beginning, it’s the ordinary acts of love, nurtured year in and year out, that have both sustained and defined them. Now, facing the challenges of age side by side, they know they’re tough enough to keep going, together.
