In the haze of youthful evenings, Tom and Sandy’s story began at a Sunday night beer party—he, fresh from Air Force duty, she in the throes of nursing school. Tom remembers making the rounds, staking a claim at a table of lively talk, locking eyes with Sandy and being drawn first by her looks, and then, slowly, by the pull of her personality. What started as a few unplanned dates spun into more, each one folding them deeper into each other’s lives. Sandy, a Nebraska farm girl, was captivated by Tom’s southern ease and honesty, and found herself involved in his world in a way she never had been before.

Faith threaded through their early days, sometimes subtly, other times challenging them outright. Sandy speaks with admiration of Tom’s reliance on the Lord—his willingness to talk about God and his steadfastness in faith. Their different upbringings—he a Baptist, she a Methodist—eventually led them to a shared pew, but not without difficulty. Looking back, Tom’s journey to “truly” finding faith at fifty-two became a pivotal marker in their relationship. There were moments of gentle humor, too—Tom’s impish smile as he notes Sandy always has to be in charge, her laughter warming the space between them.

The depth of their connection pulses most clearly in the small, ordinary acts of care. Tom boasts about Sandy’s home-cooked meals—laughter twining around the memory of a less-than-successful tuna casserole. As time has claimed its due and health has faded, they’ve grown practiced in showing up for each other’s needs—Sandy noticing Tom’s presence as her own limitations grow, Tom quietly tending to her, both grateful for the familiar routines that bind them. Their home, built for two, expanded with love for their two daughters, whose own children now fill family gatherings with laughter and continuity. Almost all of their extended family remains close, roots entwined in a shared landscape.

Their hardest lessons weren’t learned in grand moments, but in quiet reckonings. The arrival of their first daughter—tiny, premature, her life hanging by the thinnest thread—brought them to the knees of faith and tested every fragile hope they’d nurtured. Sandy became a mother earlier and more suddenly than she’d prepared herself for, her hands aching for a baby she could not hold for weeks, both parents forced to surrender control and trust in something greater. It wasn’t just the waiting that marked them, but the certainty, after all these years, that it was God who held them through it. The memory of that time still surfaces in conversation—a quiet reminder of grace through hardship.

If pressed for wisdom after decades together, Tom and Sandy name three truths: openness, even in the hardest conversations; the vital importance of communication; and a commitment, unwavering, to attending church together. Faith wasn’t simply a side note—it grew gradually, sometimes through their daughter’s innocent conviction more than their own certainty, shaping their experience of adversity and joy alike. Now, as they look back over a life built on ordinary days and extraordinary faith, they both carry a humble gratitude: for salvation found late, for mistakes made safe in trust, and for the unspoken promise that whatever comes, they will face it—hand in hand, steadied by love and a hope far greater than their own strength.
